The NSU Lady Demons Tennis team has been setting the courts ablaze, not only as a team, but individually as well.
As a team, the Lady Demons have ascended into the rankings. NSU is ranked 64th according to Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national women's rankings.
On its way to being ranked 64th, the Lady Demons have won eight straight and have accumulated a 10-1 record overall, and a perfect 5-0 record in conference.
"It's nice to achieve a national ranking and be recognized by the national ranking committee," Head Coach Patric DuBois said. "The girls have worked very hard this year and have played at a very good and consistent level so far this spring.
"We hope to continue to do so and achieve our main goal of a Southland Conference championship."
Not only have the Lady Demons been winning, but it has been by dominating fashion.
Of the 10 wins, NSU has won 7-0 four times, 6-1 five times and 5-2. The only loss so far this season was to the Tulane Lady Green Wave by the score of 3-4.
"We played well," DuBois said. "I thought we did as well as we could to win, but Tulane just beat us, that's it."
Tennis, despite being a "team" sport is made up of individuals, and without good individual players a tennis team won't perform well.
Luckily for NSU, the individuals that make up the team are on top of their game.
As of yesterday, the NSU Lady Demons have had the Southland Conference Player of the Week for the fourth straight week in a row.
Olga Bazhanova follows teammates Andrea Nedorostova, Kathrin Lange and last week's recipient, Martina Rubesova.
SLC Sports Information directors vote for the player of the week awards in all sports and cannot vote for their own nominees.
Bazhanova was perfect last weekend, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Petra Keilova of UCA before she had to come from behind to prevail over Veronique Luksisch of Arkansas-Little Rock 3-6, 7-6, 10-3 on Sunday.
In doubles, Bazhanova/Curukovic won 8-2 over Keilova/Mainz of UCA and 8-5 over Weijenborg/Kakovkina of UALR.
"They have been playing great week in and week out," DuBois said.
"The four of them among the rest of the team, that is performing almost just as well, has made my job as a coach extremely easy."
The Lady Demons look to continue its winning ways as it begins a three match home stand this Saturday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex against ULL.
