The Creative and Performing Arts department will host the Louisiana Association Jazz Education State Jazz Festival this Friday and Saturday for twelve high schools and colleges.

"This Festival is a way to promote the playing and studying of the art of jazz in the public schools and universities," Galindo Rodriguez, event director, said.

The festival will kick off Friday night at Mama's Oyster House in downtown Natchitoches. Featured guest artist Rob Wilkerson and NSU's music professors and students will play jazz music. Student and festival attendees are welcome to come.

Each year the festival has a featured guest artist. Every guest has been someone who works full time and around the world in the jazz industry.

In an interview, Rodriguez stated that the point of a guest artist is so the students can meet someone who is in the business and to learn from him.

Rob Wilkerson was chosen as this year's guest artist. He is the lead alto player with Michael Buble, and he travels with his own group around the world. Wilkerson will perform Saturday at 5 pm in Magale Recital Hall.

"He enjoys teaching and working with college students," Rodriguez said. "So, we are lucky to have him at the festival."

Throughout the last six years, the festival has grown into a competition. Each school or university will be represented by a group who will perform in front of four judges. The groups will have 30 minutes to play three pieces of music. After each performance, the groups will have a chance to be coached for 30 more minutes by one of the judges.

Rodriguez stated the educational side of the festival comes in when the judges help each group.

The competitions will begin at ten on Saturday morning in Magale Recital Hall. All competitions are free and open to the public.

NSU will be competing in this year's festival represented by the group NSU Monday Night Jazz Combo. The group will perform at 3 p.m.

Each group will be competing for a first, second or third place award. Other awards, including the special instrument award, are also given. The award ceremony will be Saturday at 5 p.m. in Magale Hall.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the festival to watch students bring jazz music to life.
